Let's start with the conclusion: The best times to travel to China are from mid-February to the end of April and from September to the end of December.
Why? During these windows, you'll find fewer crowds, lower prices, and pleasant weather. Just be sure to exclude the 7-day National Day holiday (October 1st to 7th).
Why Timing is Everything in China
To write this blog post, I looked up the Chinese government's official holiday schedule for 2025. Here it is:

According to China's official 2023 statistics, the total population is 1.4 billion. So, what does this mean for a traveler?
During any public holiday, you can expect any tourist attraction to be swamped with people. We have a perfect phrase for it: 人山人海 (rén shān rén hǎi) — literally, "people mountain, people sea."

The Major Holiday Hurdles
In China, the longest public holidays, often called "Golden Weeks," are the ones to watch out for:
- Chinese New Year
- Labor Day
- National Day
Next, we have to factor in student breaks. The winter break partially overlaps with the Chinese New Year holiday, and the summer break covers all of July and August. And since China is in the Northern Hemisphere, we'll also exclude May and June to avoid the hot and rainy season in many parts of the country.
This process of elimination gives us the following calendar:

The Price Shock Factor
I have to stress this: prices are extremely sensitive to timing.
- Off-Season: For $50 USD, you can book a very nice hotel in almost any Chinese city. We're talking well-decorated rooms, great amenities, and attentive service.
- Peak Season (Golden Weeks & Chinese New Year): Don't be surprised if prices for the same hotel double ($100 USD) or even skyrocket tenfold ($500 USD). It's absolutely possible.
My Final Advice
So, if you get the chance to visit China, do your best to avoid the major peak travel seasons. You'll be rewarded with better service at a fraction of the cost, making for a much more enjoyable trip.
